Simple, practical ways to make the first days at preschool feel calm and happy, for your child and for you.

Starting preschool is a big step for the whole family. A few tears are normal, for children and parents alike. The good news is that a little preparation makes a big difference.

In the weeks before

  • Talk about school in a positive, matter-of-fact way. Read stories about starting school together.
  • Visit the school with your child, so the rooms and faces feel familiar.
  • Practise small skills like opening a lunchbox, washing hands and putting on shoes.
  • Move bedtime and wake-up time gradually towards the school routine.

On the day

Keep goodbyes short, warm and confident. Always say goodbye rather than slipping away, and tell your child when you will be back, using something they understand, such as “after lunch and play”.

A calm, cheerful goodbye tells your child: this is a safe place, and I trust these people.

After school

Children are often tired and hungry after the first days. Offer a snack, some quiet time and plenty of cuddles. Instead of “How was your day?”, try “What did you play with today?” or “Who did you sit next to at lunch?”

How we help at Little Explorers

We agree a settling-in plan with every family, starting with short visits alongside a parent and building up gradually. We keep in touch throughout, so you always know how your child is doing. Read more on our admissions page.
