A school visit tells you more in twenty minutes than any brochure can. But it is easy to get swept along by bright walls and new toys and forget to ask the questions that really matter. Take this list with you, whichever preschool you visit.

Before you go

Think about what matters most for your family: distance from home or work, the hours you need, your budget and how your child handles new places. Then book a visit during a normal day if you can, so you see the school as it really is.

The 10 questions

  1. How many children are in each class, and how many adults? Small groups mean more attention, calmer rooms and teachers who truly know each child.
  2. What training do the teachers have? Ask about early-childhood qualifications, first aid and how often staff keep learning.
  3. What does a typical day look like? Listen for a healthy balance of play, stories, outdoor time, meals and rest.
  4. Which curriculum do you follow, and how does it work for this age? A good answer explains how children learn through play, not just what they learn.
  5. How do you keep children safe? Ask about gates, sign-in and pick-up rules, who can collect your child and what happens if a child is unwell.
  6. How will I know how my child is doing? Daily updates, regular chats and simple progress notes help you feel part of the day.
  7. How do you help new children settle in? Look for a gentle, step-by-step plan that is shaped around your child.
  8. What happens at mealtimes and nap time? Ask what food is served, how allergies are handled and where children rest.
  9. How do you handle tears, tantrums and toddler disagreements? Kind, consistent approaches that help children name their feelings are a great sign.
  10. What are the fees, and what do they include? A clear fee guide with no surprises shows a school that respects families.

What to look for while you are there

  • Children who look busy, relaxed and happy, and adults who get down to their level.
  • Clean, tidy rooms with toys and books children can reach themselves.
  • Children’s own artwork on the walls, not just shop-bought posters.
  • Safe outdoor space that is used every day.

Trust your instincts. If you can picture your child happy there, that feeling counts for a lot.
